Still had to sent the TiVo hardware for repair but without the expander it's one less thing to break.Don't buy this product to work with the TiVo Edge Antenna Product!
However, I paid the price to return the box to Newegg, and decided to upgrade the hard drive with Instant Cake instead. I thought perhaps that the internal hard drive had crashed (my TiVo is only 7 months old), but that turned out to not be the case. Overall Review: For the novice looking to gain space on a TiVo (or compatible box), this is probably worth it. I'm sure it's security measure to prevent transfer of programs but it sucks to lose 650 GB of video because only one drive crashes.
That means if EITHER crash (Expander or Internal) you lose everything.
It actually wasn't too difficult to setup, especially once you read the instructions all the way through (it's not *as* simple as plug-n-play).Ĭons: Within two weeks of hooking this up to my TiVo, I had a full failure on my system that resulted in me sending the box back to TiVo at a cost of $54.Īlso, and this is BIG - the drive shares the content with the internal hard drive. Pros: Lots of extra space on TiVo HD boxes. Overall Review: Extremely quiet and has rubber around the edges to deaden vibration. Moving to a different TiVo will reformat the drive erasing all previous recordings.
It cannot be used to move recordings to a PC or a different TiVo. Powers up after a blackout along with TiVo, no need to do anything.Ĭons: TiVo splits recordings between the internal and external drive to prevent piracy. TiVo never loses the drive or required a reinstall. I never lost any data even after repeated blackouts. Always leave it plugged in and powered up.
Install it and forget it, works seamlessly.įollow initial power up instructions so TiVo can find, format and install the drive. Installed the same as the drive from TiVo website, exact match. When I purchased a second TiVoHD I saved myself the 50 dollars by buying the DVD Expander from Newegg. Pros: This is the exact same model as the one I bought from the TiVo website for my first TiVoHD. NewEgg was great, and got the product shipped out fast (and for free!), so bonus! Thanks NewEgg! Ifm however, if you have a TiVo and want additional storage capacity, this is the way to go! Not only is it TiVo supported, but it is a breeze to set up! That said, if you intend to use this for basic file storage, etc, on a computer, it may be best to consider another model.
Overall Review: I noticed a couple of reviews complaining about this drive, but they indicated that it was connected to their computers, rather than to a DVR. I almost prefer a brick with a standard plug to this, though I'm sure I am in the minority! It's a minor gripe, and I will get over it, but the surge protector is laid out in such a way that it even allows for large odd-shaped plugs to be used, with space between some of the outlets, but this one still was too long.
The plug is shaped odd, and does not fit in my surge protector without just covering up another outlet enough to keep me from being able to use it. Great drive, great price (everywhere else wanted $150-$200 for it)!!Ĭons: The only con, which is more of an annoyance than anything, is the layout of the AC adapter. I generally prefer letting the system handle the purges of shows, as needed, but due to the amount of HD shows I've been recording this season, I have been manually deleting shows as I finish watching them. This is perfect for how much I record, and like to keep. Pros: This drive raised my TiVo S3's total recording limit from 32 hours to 98 hours for HD content, and up to 920+ hours for SD content.
